Guernsey alongside berth feasibility research

28. February 2012

One of the key development updates for CruiseGuernsey is that the Guernsey Government will be researching the potential development of an alongside berth in St Peter Port.

Earlier this month (February 2012) the Guernsey Government voted to fund feasibility research into establishing an alongside berth in St Peter Port. With Government austerity measures in place this demonstrates the commitment and importance of the cruise liner industry to the Island. With rising fuel costs, slower steam times and increasing regulations in certain jurisdictions it is felt that an alongside berthing facility in Guernsey, Channel Islands could be a real asset geographically as well  as from an efficiency perspective. As part of the consultation phase the more input we can achieve from key stakeholders the better. To learn more go to Cruise Report

We look forward to sharing the development updates with you.

Guernsey Cruise Industry Growth – Alongside Berth for St Peter Port

An economic impact study has been undertaken to identify the viability of building an alongside cruise berth in St Peter Port. The project is very much at the fact finding stage and is being looked at as part of a wider port development plan.

A scoping document is being presented to the Guernsey Government in January 2012 to investigate whether there is appetite amongst politicians to take the concept further.  The island is extremely passionate and appreciative of the cruise liner business but is also facing austerity budgeting so it should be an interesting debate.

Scoping report under consideration can be viewed here

It’s a first for Silver Spirit

9. June 2011

Luxury cruise liner Silver Spirit of the Silversea line recently headed into St Peter Port on the final leg of her world cruise to give passengers a snapshot of life in Guernsey. In keeping with maritime tradition, the captain was presented with a keepsake to celebrate the ship’s inaugural visit to local waters and the first of two visits by Silversea ships to Guernsey this Summer.

80 out of the 500 passengers on board enjoyed 119 days of luxury during their world cruise, whilst others had various shorter itineraries. Captain Angelo Corsaro, Senior Commandant of the Silversea’s fleet, was delighted to welcome a group of local dignitaries including the Bailiff, Sir Geoffrey Rowland and Lady Rowland, Deputy Carla McNulty Bauer, Minister, Commerce and Employment Department, Deputy Tom Le Pelley, Deputy Minister, Public Services, Guernsey Harbourmaster, Captain Peter Gill and St Peter Port Senior Town Constable Barry Cash.

Captain Corsaro officially welcomed the party on board and said ‘The passengers and crew have enjoyed many adventures during the trip – spied a band of pirates, visited a newly emerging Egypt, learnt to cook a Sicilian supper and cruised the Suez Canal. Another highlight for me is bringing my ship into St Peter Port for the first time’.

The Bailiff spoke of his delight in welcoming a Silversea cruise ship into local waters and trusted that it would be the first of many such visits. He emphasised that Guernsey has natural beauty and many attractions which would be of interest to Silversea travellers.

The Bailiff, Sir Geoffrey Rowland said ‘I can also assure the Silversea cruise ship that when its passengers go ashore they will be warmly welcomed and I hope that passengers will return and choose Guernsey as a holiday destination in the future’.

The Bailiff then handed over copies of two Guernsey books – which will now take pride of place in the ship’s library for everyone’s reference and enjoyment whilst on board to interest them before they arrive and to enjoy afterwards.

Barry Cash presented a special plaque to mark the occasion on behalf of St Peter Port Constables and received one in return from the Captain which will be displayed in the Constables Office.

Guernsey: Top spot for cruise ships in the British Isles

18. January 2011

With 76 vessels scheduled to visit this season, the islands of Guernsey hope that this will be enough to once again take the top spot as the most visited British port  for day calls.

In 2011, Guernsey will deliver a warm welcome to the passengers of the Queen Elizabeth, the new Cunard ship, that will make its inaugural calls to the island in September. Queen Elizabeth recalls the rich heritage of its predecessor, which bore the same name, and features Guernsey in two of its itineraries.

Situated some 140km from the south coast of England – yet only 44km from the Normandy coast of France – Guernsey is geographically well positioned on the southern side of the entrance to the English Channel.

With more than 800 years of history behind it St Peter Port, Guernsey’s capital, is one of the most picturesque seaports in Europe. A stunning location for cruise line calls, it offers quality port services and professional handling arrangements and is open 24 hours a day.

VisitGuernsey makes arrangements for a reception marquee and ‘meet and greet’ service to welcome cruise passengers, with a range of literature about the island provided. Cruise calls are also a firm favourite with the resident community who offer a warm welcome to our passengers.

The new St Peter Port Trails map has proved a particularly popular aide for visitors interested in learning more about the town, with a selection of self-guided walks revealing different aspects of St Peter Port’s heritage and attractions.

Further options for cruise visitors include exploring the island’s Ruettes Tranquilles, scenic tours of the impressive 13th century Castle Cornet, visits to the beautiful sister islands of Sark and Herm, and finding out more about the Channel Islands’ five-year occupation history during World War II.
