St Peter Port

Situated some 140km from the south coast of England but only 44km from the Normandy coast of France St Peter Port is geographically well positioned on the southern side of the entrance to the English Channel offering fascinating panoramic views of Guernsey’s capital and our sister islands of Herm and Sark.

St Peter Port is a beautiful town that has been in existence for well over 800 years and is dominated on its southern side by the impressive Castle Cornet, a magnificent granite fortress dating from the 13th century.

Extensive alterations were carried out in the 16th century and during England’s Civil War, when Guernsey supported Cromwell, the Royalists held out in the castle for eight years. With the building of the southern breakwaters of St Peter Port Harbour in the 18th century, Castle Cornet was effectively joined to the mainland of Guernsey.

The port is capable of handling at least two large cruise liners at any one time and currently hosts between 60 and 70 cruise liner calls per year, which either anchor or come to an alongside berth depending on size and availability.

The experienced agents, in conjunction - with tour operators, offer conducted tours around the island.  Other cruise liner visitors opt to enjoy the freedom of the cobbled streets of St Peter Port - either relaxing overlooking one of St Peter Port marinas, visiting one of towns fascinating museums or shopping in one of the many boutiques or stores (please note Sunday opening is limited).

The majority of cruise liners are required to anchor off St Peter Port but the transfer by tenders normally takes no more than five minutes. VisitGuernsey arranges for a reception marquee and meet and greet service to welcome cruise passengers with information about the island. This is erected at the point of landing within the Harbour, which is immediately adjacent to the boarding point for coaches and, of course, within easy walking distance of the town’s main shopping precincts and restaurants.
