Economic Development and Home Affairs working with hospitality on marketing campaign to help recruit staff

The States of Guernsey is committed to working in partnership with the Guernsey Hospitality Association to develop a marketing campaign to help recruit much-needed staff for the sector.

19 August 2021

Led by the Committee for Economic Development and Home Affairs, this represents government’s commitment to do all it can to support hospitality, which is facing significant recruitment challenges heavily influenced by Brexit and exacerbated by Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Staff leading on tourism marketing, assisted by officers within Home Affairs’ Population Management Team have agreed a round of destination promotional activity.

For general staff, the campaign will launch in January to help recruit for the 2022 tourist season. For specialist roles within hospitality, the industry already promotes opportunities internationally and the States will support efforts to expand into new markets.

Deputy Neil Inder, President of the Committee for Economic Development, said:

‘We have been working closely with industry representatives in support of the hospitality sector, specifically in relation to recruitment which is proving a significant challenge for the sector.

With regard to generalist workers we will work alongside the industry on a destination recruitment campaign, aimed primarily at UK based workers, to begin in January 2022 with the aim of sourcing staff for the 2022 tourism season.

For specialist workers, the industry already promotes employment opportunities internationally and, with our support, will expand this to new markets.

‘We are also working closely with politicians and officers from the Committee for Home Affairs, Population Management and the Guernsey Border Agency, and my thanks to them for their assistance as we seek to help the industry expand recruitment into more international markets.

Our tourism sector is finally able to begin welcoming visitors again, and signs are positive for the sector having a good second half of 2021 but we need to do all we can to help them access the workforce they need to meet the demand and be fighting fit for 2022.’
