Heritage-focused media coverage, visiting journalists and influencers

With a calendar full of heritage-themed events and attractions, 2025 is another busy year for visiting journalists, media titles and famous faces.

14 April 2025

A two-year heritage focus

Alongside golden beaches, breathtaking cliff walks and a thriving gastronomy scene, Guernsey’s unique history is a key reason for more than half of all holidays to the island.

To leverage this, last year VisitGuernsey began a two-year, heritage-focused strategy, placing additional emphasis on promoting the island’s unique history to a new audience.

Throughout 2024, new creative partnerships were established with historians, authors, chefs, and podcasters, focused on creating engaging social content. Amongst others, we welcomed Al Murray and James Holland (whose Guernsey-focused episodes of their podcast ‘We Have Ways of Making You Talk’ have received 250,000 listens to-date) plus History Alice, who filmed a video series over the Liberation Day weekend which reached over 597,000 people.

2025’s well-known faces

To maximise this year’s 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, we are working with three key historians – Lucy Worsley, Megan McManus, and Jack Chesher – who are exploring the island with personalised itineraries. They will be sharing their content to their history-loving audiences over the Liberation Day weekend.

Lucy Worsley – total followers: 422,000

Historian, BBC television presenter, author, and podcaster, Lucy Worsley is a well-known face in homes across the UK.

Lucy, who was on-island in early March, had a personalised itinerary that focused on some of the highlights of Guernsey’s World War II history, including the German Occupation Museum, Pleinmont gun battery, Batterie Mirus, the German Underground Hospital and La Valette Underground Military Museum.

Megan McManus – total followers: 136,000

History with Megs focuses on British and European history, particularly during the medieval and early modern periods. To capture Megan’s audience, her Guernsey itinerary focuses on the island’s forts and bunkers, as well as Castle Cornet, Hauteville House, the Little Chapel and the Renoir walk.

Megan will also explore the heritage-themed walking routes on the VisitGuernsey app.

Jack Chesher – total followers: 779,000

Founder of Living London History, guide and blogger Jack Chesher will be swapping the Big Smoke for Guernsey’s beautiful beaches and blue seas.

Jack’s personalised itinerary includes an island RIB tour, as well as in-depth exploration of La Valette Underground Military Museum, the German Occupation Museum and Batterie Mirus.

His content will be shared with his growing audience of almost 800,000. Jack also recently welcomed Alan Carr on one of his sell-out tours.

WWII YouTubers

Two influential YouTube content creators from the USA and France have also visited the island recently, enabling us to put the Bailiwick and its unique World War II history in front of highly receptive audiences.

Their itineraries included time in Alderney, exploring the island’s complete evacuation and evolving use by the German forces.

Visiting journalists and media coverage

Individual and group press trips take place every year. For 2025, a number of these have a history-focus, including a group press trip visiting over Liberation Day (8 – 11 May) which includes titles like Country Life, Discover Britain and The Sun.

Good Housekeeping will also be visiting this year (with a specific history focus), and The Telegraph will also be publishing a piece ahead of Liberation Day.

History-specific coverage has also been secured in a range of media titles, including:

  • Reach PLC (Daily Mirror, Daily Express, etc.)
  • BBC
  • The Sun
  • The Scottish Sun
  • Yorkshire Post
  • The Scotsman
  • Manchester Evening News
