The Guernsey Photography Festival Returns

The Guernsey Photography Festival returns in October, with a major exhibition documenting 30 years of social change in the UK, a focus on emerging British and Local talents and a spectacular photo-symphony event for January 2025.

19 September 2024

Fourteen years on from its inception, the Guernsey Photography Festival (GPF) continues to engage and inspire islanders and visitors of all ages through its range of passionately curated exhibitions, educational activities and cultural events. For its 11th edition, the festival brings a carefully considered selection of exhibitions and events to its audience of local and international organisations and individuals.

The fact that GPF remains one of Guernsey’s premier cultural events - recognised globally by
world-renowned artists and curators - is a testament to the spirited determination of artistic director Jean-Christophe Godet and his team. Having battled the logistical fallout from Brexit, a complete shut-down of the arts industry during Covid, and uncertain economic conditions in recent years, GPF actively promotes the island as a creative, culturally outward-facing place that is exciting to both live in and visit.

“We are honoured that for each edition of the festival, a host of talented artists respond with so much enthusiasm and excitement to our invitation to take part. GPF’s strong artistic identity and vision for the cultural sector in Guernsey continues to attract major local and international organisations and individuals, and we are delighted to present such a creative and stimulating programme for 2024.”
Jean-Christophe Godet, GPF founder & artistic director

GPF’s guest of honour this year is renowned British documentary photographer Paul Reas. GPF and the Guernsey Museum present an exceptional retrospective (1982-2012) documenting 30 years of social and economic change in the UK. Curated by Godet, Fables of Faubus tells the story of the British working class across three decades, as well as Reas’s personal artistic development over the years.

Beyond this vivid retrospective, GPF 2024 offers four stimulating exhibitions showing the work
of Jessica Bernard, Tami Aftab, Estelle Moseley and Tasmin Ferguson. Two of these emerging
British artists are from Guernsey, a result of the festival’s long-running engagement with the local artistic community.

Following the success of the Photo Symphony at GPF 2021, the festival team are once again bringing this spectacular event to the St James’s Concert Hall in collaboration with the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra. Set to a dramatic medley of classical and contemporary orchestral arrangements, the works of 14 photographers and visual artists will be projected live behind the orchestra, moving in synchronicity with a thoughtfully curated soundtrack. Please note that this event will take place on 18th of January 2025.

Exhibitions and events will take place at venues across Guernsey’s capital St. Peter’s Port from October 2024 through to January 2025. Further details can be found below and at www.guernseyphotographyfestival.com
