Visitor Information Centre moves into Market Square

The Visitor Information Centre has re-located to a new home in the heart of St Peter Port. The new centre is in the historic Market Buildings and puts visitors in the centre of town.

Last year Economic Development identified the potential need to move the Information Centre, which falls under the remit of VisitGuernsey, in the near future due to The Victor Hugo Project, the charity behind the planned Victor Hugo Centre, signing a letter of exclusivity with the States of Guernsey. This gave the project a confirmed option on the information centre, subject to funds successfully being raised.

The new Markets Building location has been sympathetically renovated, with extra care taken to retain the integrity of the building, and the history that it embodies, with seating re-instated along the original window.

President of the Committee for Economic Development, Deputy Neil Inder, said the move presented the opportunity to breathe life back into an important building in the heart of St Peter Port.

‘The new location is convenient, easy to signpost to, with a prominent, visible shop front and will provide a more engaging experience for visitors. It will, of course, also increase visitor footfall into the Markets area, presenting the opportunity for retailers to benefit,’ he said.

Additional signage has been produced to ensure new and returning visitors can find their way to the new location. There will also be temporary signage up for the first few months to help spread awareness of the new location.

The new Visitor Information Centre is also the starting point for new historic self-guided walking routes, that connects with Liberation themed routes that have been created ahead of the Islands 80th Anniversary of Liberation Day.

States of Guernsey’s Lead Marketing Officer, Zoe Gosling, said the team had been working towards this move for some time and were excited about the opportunities it presented.

‘Our new location will allow us to welcome visitors more effectively and efficiently, ensuring they have the best possible experience. The Market Square is returning to being a great community hub and, with increasingly more businesses moving into the area, events taking place and the George Crossan Gallery upstairs, we will be perfectly positioned in the middle of all this activity, which is great for visitors.

This move is part of our ongoing commitment to enhance customer experience and provide better access to our services. Please pop in and visit us the next time you’re passing.’
